A canopy garage door swings out in order to open and then slides into the ceiling of the garage, in much the same way as a retractable door. However, the difference is that canopy doors don’t cover such a large area when they swing out during opening, and there will be around one third of the door left jutting out from the garage’s exterior once fully open. This is beneficial if you want to use more storage space in the roof of your garage, as the door will occupy less space on the inside.
This type of door is also very easy to install and can be purchased pre-framed if required. However, it’s also easy to fit them onto an existing frame – no runners are needed and the door can simply be attached to the frame. Security is good, as the pivot points are well-placed to make attempted burglary difficult. In addition to this, you can purchase canopy doors in a range of materials, including steel, timber, ABS and GRP.
Thinking to the future, the downside of a canopy door is that it is incredibly difficult to fit a garage door opener. There are some options available, but the process will not be easy and it’s likely to be costly. If you decide to go down the route of having an automated door in the future, it may be easier and cheaper to fit a new garage door entirely.
